Herkimer students win CNY Scholastic Art Awards

HERKIMER — Three students from the Herkimer Central School District won a total of four awards at the 2023 Central New York Scholastic Art Awards, and their artwork will now be exhibited at Onondaga Community College.

Seniors Hannah Minguela and Lyla Williams and sophomore Jillian Hutchinson each won Silver Key Awards, with Williams also earning honorable mention.

“Over 4,000 pieces were submitted to this contest from all over central New York, and Herkimer had four winning pieces,” said Herkimer Jr./Sr. Heather McCutcheon, high school art teacher. “It’s a great honor. We are the only school in Herkimer County to have selected works to be featured on this show.

Minguela’s winning piece was a sculpture made from recycled clay and books.

“I am very grateful and happy to be accepted into this exhibition,” said Minguela.

Williams won her prizes with an acrylic painting and cardboard sculpture and Crayola Model Magic.

“The Scholastics competition was a fun opportunity to showcase artwork,” Williams said. “It’s also good to get two awards on behalf of my school.”

Hutchinson won her award for digital art she created on an iPad using the Procreate app.

“I am very honored to have my work exhibited,” Hutchinson said.

All artwork that won the 2023 Central New York Scholastic Art Awards will be displayed in the halls of the SRC Arena and Events Center at Onondaga Community College until March 5. The 2023 Central New York Scholastic Art Awards ceremony takes place on Tuesday, Jan. 17, at the same location.
