History Links COLORADO SPRINGS, Colo. — New Mexico’s Arda Azkara was named Mountain West Men’s Tennis Player of the Week, while teammate Nikolay Sysoev was named WM Men’s Tennis Freshman of the Week.
San Jose State’s Lara Marco Mas won MW Female Tennis Player of the Week, while Nevada’s Amahée Charrier received MW Female Tennis Player of the Week honors.
MAN TENNIS PLAYER OF THE WEEK
ARDA AZKARA, NEW MEXICO
Sophomore, Izmet, Turkey Was 2-0 in first in singles and 1-0 in second in doubles, winning the Jack Kennedy Classic, with victories over UT Arlington (5-2) and Gonzaga (5 -2 ). Claimed victory over UT Arlington with a 7-5, 6-4 win over Anton Shepp. Opened against Gonzaga with a 6-2 doubles victory in second place. Gave the Lobos a 2-1 lead over Gonzaga with a 6-4, 6-1 win over Sasha Trkulja at the No. 1 position.
FIRST YEAR MEN’S TENNIS OF THE WEEK
NIKOLAY SYSOEV, NEW MEXICO
Russia Competed 3rd in singles, winning 6-4, 6-2 over Gonzaga’s Matthew Hollingworth. The win gave New Mexico a 3-1 lead over Gonzaga, leading to an eventual 5-2 victory.
FEMALE TENNIS PLAYER OF THE WEEK
LARA MARCO MAS, SAN JOSE STATE
Senior, Vila-real, Spain Won all three doubles matches of the week, 6-3 against Carolina Millan of Hawaii, 6-2 against Alba Pedrero Galindo of Washington and 6-3 against Carolina Millan of Hawaii. Earned two singles wins in three matches played, 7-6 (7-5), 6-1 win over Rita Pinto, 6-0, 7-5 win over Washington Milan. WOMEN’S TENNIS FIRST YEAR OF THE WEEK
AMAHEE CHARRIER, NEVADA
Chambray les-tours, France/ French Touch Academy Helped lead the Pack to a 7-0 victory over Point Loma, going 2-0 individually in doubles and singles. Recorded a doubles win with partner Mariana Campino over Point Loma’s Amanda Letzring and Arianna Audelo, 6-1, and a singles win over Audelo 6-1, 6-3. Against UC San Diego, recorded a doubles win with Campino beating UCSD’s Kelly Leung and Ella Pachl, 6-3, as well as a singles win over Pachl 7-5, 6-3
