CAA Men’s & Women’s Tennis Weekly Awards – Feb 1 2/1/2023 1:00:00 PM

RICHMOND, Va. (February 1, 2023) – The CAA has announced its weekly winners in men’s and women’s tennis. On the men’s side, UNCW second Harold Huens and the Drexel duo of junior Alex De Sousa and second Alan Jesudason were recognized. On the women’s side, Elon senior Sibel Tanik and the Delaware tandem of graduate student Adel-Byanu Abidullina and senior Eliza Askarova were honored.

CAA Male Tennis Player of the Week
Harold Huens, So., UNCW (Waterloo, Belgium)

Huens won a three-set thriller in singles No. 2 to help UNCW edge Big South preseason favorite Presbyterian 4-3 last Sunday. With the game tied at 3-3, the reigning CAA Rookie of the Year cruised to a 6-4, 2-6, 6-4 victory over Max Benson to give the Seahawks the team victory in their first game at home.

CAA Men’s Tennis Doubles Team of the Week
Alex De Sousa, Jr., Drexel (Canterbury, UK)
Alan Jesudason, So., Drexel (Berwyn, PA)

De Sousa and Jesudason went 2-0 in doubles No. 1 and helped Drexel earn the doubles point in tag team wins over Villanova (6-1) and St. Francis Brooklyn (4-0) last week. The duo beat VU’s Josh Robinson and Noah Vinton, 6-2, and defeated SFU’s Luis Sotos and Assil Boussayri, 6-1. De Sousa also had straight-set singles No. 1 wins in both matches.

CAA Women’s Tennis Player of the Week
Sibel Tanik, Sr., Elon (Raleigh, NC)

Tanik recorded No. 1 singles and No. 1 doubles wins to help Elon earn a 6-1 team win at Houston. The senior outscored the Cougars’ Maria Dzemeshkevich 6-1, 7-5 for the singles lead and teamed with Lizette Reding for a 6-4 doubles triumph over Laura Slisane and Blanca Cortijo Parreno. Tanik is 2-1 this season and has won 12 of his last 15 completed singles at No. 1.

CAA Women’s Tennis Doubles Team of the Week
Adel-Byanu Abidullina, Gr., Delaware (Moscow, Russia)
Eliza Askarova, Sr., Delaware (Philadelphia, Pennsylvania)

Abidullina and Askarova handed ACC-member Syracuse No. 1 doubles team their first doubles loss of the season last Sunday. The Delaware duo beat Zeynep Erman and Miyuka Kimoto, 6-2, to help the Blue Hens clinch the doubles point against undefeated Orange. Abidullina also brought down
Kimoto, 6-2, 7-6 (5) in No. 1 singles in the upset of Delaware’s 5-2 team.
