Stoiana Named as SEC Player of the Week – Texas A&M Athletics

BIRMINGHAM, Ala. –Texas A&M’s Mary Stoiana has been named SEC Women’s Tennis Player of the Week, the league announced Wednesday afternoon. It’s Stoiana’s first weekly honor of the season, the fifth of her career, after finishing this week’s matches with a combined 4-0 record in singles and doubles at the league’s launch weekend. ‘ITA.

Stoiana’s performance at Kickoff Weekend helped land the No. 3 Texas A&M ticket to the ITA National Team Indoor Championships. In the first round against FAU, she helped score a doubles point with partner Carson Branstine as they beat Martina Kudelova/Carla Galmiche of the Owls (6-0). Stoiana doubled up with a dominating performance against Kudelova in singles action (6-0, 6-1), helping push the Aggies through to the final round against then-No. 20 Florida. In doubles with the Gators, she and Branstine snatched the first doubles match against Carly Briggs/Alicia Dudeney (6-4). In a closely contested singles match, Stoiana defeated Florida’s Briggs (6-2, 3-6, 6-2) who clinched the point that secured Maroon & White’s spot at the National Team Indoor Championships. Stoiana and the Aggies return to action Saturday as they head to Houston for a doubleheader against Rice at 11 a.m. at the George R. Brown Tennis Center.
