Lynx Forward Napheesa Collier Hosts Recess for National Girls & Women in Sports Day

MINNEAPOLIS/ST. PAUL — As part of National Girls and Women in Sports Day, Lynx forward Napheesa Collier spent time with students at Marcy Arts Magnet Elementary School in Minneapolis. Collier hosted a “Let’s Get Active: WNBA National Girls & Women in Sports Day Recess Celebration.”

“National Girls and Women in Sport Day is important because it highlights the importance of women’s sports and how important they are to girls,” said Collier. “There are many studies that show that girls who play sports are more confident, get better jobs, get leadership roles because it instills confidence and a leadership mindset. It is important for young girls to have other female role models and inspiration. Be someone they can look up to.

In partnership with Playworks, Collier led an hour of organized play with 4th and 5th graders, including lightning, square, hoop and switch. Playworks is a non-profit organization working to improve the health and well-being of all children by increasing opportunities for physical activity and safe, meaningful play.

National Girls and Women in Sport Day began in 1987 to recognize women’s sport. The annual celebration of girls and women in sport encourages girls to stay in sport and achieve their full potential. To celebrate the day, the 12 WNBA teams hosted a community event for players and youth from their local communities.
