MANCHESTER, Connecticut – The University of Connecticut women’s tennis team won 6-1 over Fairfield University in the first home opener of the 2023 season on Wednesday afternoon.

UConn would start slowly in doubles, with the first and second doubles falling to 6-4 respectively. Third pair doubles, Cameron Didion and Caroline Cook would battle in a tiebreaker but fall 7-6.

Then the Huskies would begin to gain momentum in singles play. At six singles, Didion quickly cruised to a 6-0, 6-0 victory to bring UConn into the picture. Soon after, Isabel Petri Bere and Olivia Wright would eventually emerge victorious. Petri Bere took a 6-1, 6-0 victory in the fourth singles and Wright battled his way to a 6-2, 6-1 victory in the first singles. Aleksandra Karamyshev would then win the match, making it 4-1 at UConn with a 6-1, 7-5 third singles victory.

Maria Constantinou and Cook would find themselves in a tough battle with long exchanges in the second set. UConn would battle for the two extra singles points as Constantinou would win 6-2, 7-5 in the second singles and Cook would win 7-6, 6-4.

“It was a great win against a very good Fairfield team today,” said director of tennis Glenn Marshall. “Our home opener didn’t start as well as expected as our doubles were a bit sloppy and had too many unforced errors. It cost us losing the doubles point. But I’m proud of the efforts of the team to step up in singles and really focus on the first half of their matches, and that fight and focus led us to seize the momentum in most singles matches and get wins on all six courts.
