There’s been talk of cracking down on user account sharing for a while now, but it seems these are the exact steps Netflix, broadcaster of some well-received game TV adaptations like The Witcher and Cyberpunk: Edgerunners, is taking to curb many non-household users accessing the service from a single paid subscription have been revealed.

As reported by gHacks, the streaming giant has updated its service FAQ in multiple regions to describe its new anti-sharing methods. Netflix will actively monitor the IP addresses from which its users connect their accounts and devices, and may further require them to verify their device from their home network if it deems it necessary. To verify a device:

Netflix sends a link to the email address or phone number associated with the primary account owner. The link opens a page with a 4-digit verification code. The code must be entered on the device that requested it within 15 minutes. If the code has expired, you will need to request a new verification code from the device. Once successful, this device can be used to watch Netflix. Device verification may be required periodically.

Share Netflix with someone who doesn’t live with you

People outside of your household will need to use their own account to watch Netflix. Devices that are not part of your primary location may be blocked from watching Netflix.

If you want to share Netflix with someone who doesn’t live with you, you can add an additional member to your account.

Add an additional member

Account holders on a Standard or Premium plan can share Netflix with someone who doesn’t live with them for less than our basic plan price by adding an additional member to their account. An additional member will have their own account and password, but their additional member slot will be paid for by the account owner who invited them to join their Netflix.

The additional member must create their account in the same country where the account owner who invited them created their account. Additional members cannot be added to bundles included with Netflix or third-party billed accounts.

When creating a new account or adding an additional member, members can transfer a profile from an existing account, including Recommendations, Viewing History, My List, Games saved files, settings, etc.

If you decide to add an additional member, you must first approve the additional monthly fee.
