Teen Wolf Fans Are Slamming The Paramount+ Movie’s Decisions: ‘This Movie Simply Cannot Be Canon

MAJOR SPOILERS are ahead for Teen Wolf: The Movie, now streaming with a Paramount+ subscription.

Teen Wolf had an incredible six-year run that ended in 2017 after a good hundred episodes. So when the movie was announced without key members of the original Teen Wolf cast, fans were worried about what they were up to. Now that Teen Wolf: The Movie is out, all the reactions are pouring in, and long-time fans of the show are especially unhappy with the new version.

Going into the movie, a lot of Teen Wolf fans didn’t have high expectations (myself included). The news of Dylan O’Brien not being part of the project was particularly concerning, especially since he was arguably the TV series’ best character. Stiles and Tyler Posey’s Scott has always been an emotional core on the show who didn’t get screen time in the movie. As one fan shared on Twitter:

If there’s one thing to remember from six years of #TeenWolf, it’s that Stiles will always be by Scott’s side. Therefore, this movie just can’t be canon. Pardon. #TeenWolfMovie pic.twitter.com/WFjUQBUUhkJanuary 26, 2023

O’Brien was asked to be part of the film, but chose to pass it on because he “decided he was left in a really good place for me and I still want to leave him there.” Due to her decision, the beloved history between Stiles and Holland Roden’s characters was handled awkwardly, with Lydia sharing in the film that they broke up because she saw visions of him dying in a car accident and she wanted to protect him.

O’Brien isn’t the only Teen Wolf actor to miss the film, either. Arden Cho also passed on the film due to salary disputes. But even many returning characters weren’t given great arcs to further their storylines.

It’s truly a sad and frustrating chapter for Teen Wolf when the show’s biggest fans aren’t happy with the rare reunion movie six years after the finale. The movie was even written by original Teen Wolf creator Jeff Davis. Here’s another hot topic fans are talking about:

the writers of the movie Teen Wolf burning Derek Hale to death after what happened to his entire family was so evil AND they did it IN FRONT OF HIS SON… pic.twitter.com/WSc7OGt8x8January 27, 2023

The film ends with the death of Tyler Hoechlin’s Derek Hale, who has a teenage son these days. It’s another earth-shattering move in Teen Wolf: The Movie, but one that Tyler Posey told CinemaBlend he thinks is “necessary” for the story to develop. At least the movie revives Crystal Reed’s Allison Argent after her death on the show and rekindles Scott and Allison’s romance, but I can’t say it was as powerful as it was trying to be. A fan posted this PSA to Teen Wolf fans who haven’t seen the movie yet:

If you liked Teen Wolf growing up…. DON’T WATCH THE MOVIE, I’M SO SERIOUS THEY FUCKED EVERYTHING. SAVE YOUR TIME. SAVE YOUR DIGNITY. Thank me later. #TeenWolfMovie pic.twitter.com/s4VIu6fpptJanuary 26, 2023

Ouch! It’s certainly not the kind of reaction one would want to see for Teen Wolf: The Movie, but fans are slamming the movie left and right. It’s an unfortunate development for the hit series, but hey, there’s always the original series to go back to!
