‘Too Much Golf’: Matthew Fitzpatrick Raises Concerns Regarding PGA Tour Amidst ‘Need a Break’ Rant

The 2023 PGA Tour season kicked off with a huge increase in purses and bonuses. But all of these benefits came with strings attached. New regulations and requirements mean players compete like never before. But many have expressed concerns about it, and the latest of them is reigning US Open champion Matthew Fitzpatrick. The Englishman candidly suggested the Tour was “ridiculous”.

Fitzpatrick left his mark on the golfing world last year when he picked up his first major win at the Country Club in Brookline, Massachusetts. Since then, he has made quite a name for himself and is even today the 7th player involved in the TGL.

The eight-time European Tour winner has consistently risen to the top of the game in recent years. Fitzpatrick was ranked eighth on the PGA Tour PIP list for 2022. While that resulted in a big bonus, it also resulted in a problem. The Englishman is now expected to play in 20 Tour of America events. While that doesn’t sound too hard, to compete in the Ryder Cup he also needs to fulfill commitments in Europe.

This has led to a busy schedule for the 2022 US Open winner. According to a recent report from Golf Magic, he assured the public that his play in “some” events was not an issue. “I’m not really worried about it,” he said. “If I have to go and play events that I haven’t really played before, that’s not really a problem.”

But the big winner had a huge concern. He added that players weren’t enthusiastic about playing so much golf and that many wanted to “play less”. The Englishman said: “I think there’s too much golf, whatever your level.”

The golf pro thought people also “needed a break” from the sport. He claimed that the public could undoubtedly sit down every week and watch the players play, but that did not mean that the players could play regularly every week. “I think that’s why I think having less, but having, bringing together more top players is obviously the way to go,” he said.

The Tour’s drastic high turnout measures were aimed at keeping pace with LIV Golf. But on the contrary, LIV players only have 14 events in the year. The Tour was able to match the LIV scholarships, which go up to $25 million, but in doing so they now also keep players on a much higher level.
