As the top seed of the Thailand Tennis Open, Bianca Andreescu of Mississauga is aiming for what would be her first win at the tournament in more than three years.
However, the 22-year-old Canadian, who has risen to No. 42 in the Women’s Tennis Association (WTA) rankings as she fights to be among tennis’ elite again, has a lot of work to do before that such a scenario does not materialize.
She will face off tomorrow morning (February 3) on center court in the quarter-finals against Ukrainian Marta Kostyuk (WTA No. 60), seeded No. 5 in the tournament. The game starts at 6:15 a.m. EST.
Andreescu, a Grand Slam champion thanks to a superb victory at the US Open in 2019, continues her comeback after a long spell away from tennis in 2021.
Earlier this week in Hua Hin, Thailand, she beat England’s Harriet Dart (WTA #104) 6-3, 6-4 on Tuesday and Anastasia Zakharova (WTA #186) of Russia 6-2, 7- 5 Wednesday to qualify. for the last eight Fridays.
Mississaugan improved their career record against Dart to 3-1.
Andreescu has been consistent on both ends of the court, winning 56% of service points and 56.1% of return points.
She had two aces to none for Dart.
At the end of January, Andreescu advanced to the second round of the Australian Open, beating 25th seed Marie Bouzkova (Czechia) in the first round before falling to 86th WTA Cristina Bucsa (Spain).
Last October, in what has become a familiar scenario, Andreescu was once again knocked out of a tournament after picking up impressive wins at the start.
The Canadian tennis star has struggled with inconsistency as she tries to climb back into the top WTA rankings.
Andreescu remains in search of a tournament victory as she seeks to return to the top of the women’s singles standings. She reached No. 4 in the WTA rankings at the end of 2019 after shocking the tennis world with her victory at the US Open earlier the same year.
