The Last of Us’ Nick Offerman hasn’t picked up game since Banjo-Kazooie

Nick Offerman, best known for his role as the gruff head of the parks department on Parks and Rec, recently starred as Bill on last week’s episode of The Last of Us. The surprisingly poignant love story told in the third episode of the HBO zombie survival series deviates from the original script of Bill and Frank in the game. Offerman sat down on Jimmy Kimmel Live on Wednesday to talk about the role and sing a Linda Ronstandt song for his performance.

Naturally, Kimmel asked Offerman if he had ever played The Last of Us game. While the answer to that question was a quick no, Offerman explained why. Turns out he’s no stranger to video games. He just made the conscious choice never to take it again after losing two weeks of his life to Rare’s Banjo-Kazooie platformer in 1998.

“I’ve decided I’m never going to do this again,” Offerman told Kimmel, after recounting the sweet dopamine surge and subsequent crash after beating Banjo-Kazooie. “Luckily because the games got so good…I think I’d be in a basement and not even go audition for shows like [The Last of Us].”

While Bill likely won’t appear in any further episodes of The Last of Us, new episodes drop on Sundays.
