The Murray State women’s basketball team will look to kick off 2023 on Sunday when they host Valparaiso at the CFSB Center in Murray, Kentucky, for a New Year’s matinee that clocks in at 2 p.m.
The Racers enter Sunday’s tilt at 1-0 in the MVC after a 68-55 win over UIC on Friday at the CFSB Center. Katelyn Young led all scorers with 21 points in the game, while Hannah McKay had a double-double of 17 points and a season-high 12 rebounds.
Series in brief
Sunday will be the very first meeting between the Racers and the Beacons.
After falling to Belmont, 74-60, on Friday in their MVC opener, Valparaiso enters Sunday at 2-7 on aggregate, having lost each of their last seven games.
Leah Earnest currently leads Valpo with 12.2 points per game, while Olivia Brown and Ali Saunders are nearly tied with Earnest at 12.1 and 12.0, respectively. Earnest also leads Valpo on the boards at 8.8 rebounds per game, while Ella Van Weelden trails at 3.8
Valpo is currently averaging 65.3 points per game on 43.3 percent shooting with 32.4 rebounds per game. Meanwhile, Beacons opponents are averaging 75.9 points per game on 41.5 percent shooting with 38.4 rebounds per game.
A win would be…
A victory on Sunday would put the Racers two wins away from a pair of historic milestones. A victory over Valparaiso would give the MSU program all-time wins 649 and 199 all-time wins at the CFSB Center.
Hoopin’ in the new year
Sunday will mark the sixth time in its history that Murray State will play on New Year’s Day. Currently, the Racers are 2-3 in those contests. Contests are typically closed for MSU on New Year’s Day, with four of the five games decided by possession.
