Former Ryder Cup Player Barry Lane Passes Away Age 62

Former Ryder Cup player and multiple Tour winner Barry Lane has sadly passed away at the age of 62.
Lane, from west London, took up golf aged 14 and became an assistant pro at Downshire Golf Club in Berkshire. He finally joined the European Tour in 1982, at the age of 22, and went on to have a hugely successful playing career.
The Englishman, one of the country’s most renowned and respected professionals in recent decades, made Bernard Gallacher’s 1993 Ryder Cup side at the Belfry one of four signings for the European side. He is fourth on the European Tour’s all-time starting list with 693, winning five times on the Tour, including the Scottish Open, European Masters and British Masters.
Lane continued to compete in his senior years, winning the Legends Tour, formerly known as the European Senior Tour, eight times, including two Scottish Senior Open titles and two MCB Tour championships.

He was in Mauritius earlier this month for the season-ending MCB Tour Championship, where he presented the new Barry Lane Rookie of the Year trophy to Brazil’s Adilson Da Silva.
“We are deeply saddened to learn of the passing of Barry Lane,” said European Tour CEO Keith Pelley. he was a much-loved figure in both Towers.
“The renaming of the Legends Tour Rookie of the Year trophy in his honor is a fitting tribute, and I’m delighted he had the opportunity to present it in December. The thoughts of everyone within the European Tour group are with his wife Camilla, the Lane family and his many friends across the world of golf.

A number of tributes were paid on social media including Tony Johnstone who wrote: “What a sad way to usher in the new year. A fine golfer and a true friend. All who knew him will miss this smile and that humor. RIP Baz and my condolences to Camilla, Ben, Emma and the rest of the family.”
Tony Jacklin wrote: “Barry Lane was a prince of a guy. He will be missed. RIP”
