In the third, however, the 32-year-old Evans – Britain’s current No. 2 – pushed back as he regained his composure and won 6-3.
This gave the Great Britain team 3-1 which could not be revised with the remaining matches to be played between the two teams.
Cameron Norrie beat Rafael Nadal 3-6 6-3 6-4 the day before at Ken Rosewall Arena in Sydney, and Katie Swan beat Nuria Parrizas-Diaz for Great Britain.
